Soroptimist (SILB) founded Meals On Wheels in Long Beach in 1971 and has been financially supporting the program since that time. On Wednesday, March 14th, Meals On Wheels executive director, Bill Cruikshank, and his staff hosted a St. Patrick’s Day luncheon for the SILB membership.
Emulating the exact daily operations of Meals On Wheels volunteers, SILB members were enlisted to dish the food for serving. Wearing hairnets and gloves, they prepared the same food Meals On Wheels clients were given that day. The attendees were seated and brought up to date by Mr. Cruikshank on the current activities and growth statistics of the program.
After the meal, SILB President Julia McConaghy presented Bill and his staff with a check in the amount of $8,300 raised by Soroptimist’s Munch & A Movie fundraiser on behalf of the Meals On Wheels program.
New and recent Soroptimist members were impressed with Meals On Wheels’ operation and “long timers” were proud to be a part of the program’s success. At the conclusion of the luncheon, the ladies were thanked and given a shamrock plant or fresh flowers, courtesy of Trader Joes.
